News from George J Mitchell School Library
The library program has some exciting opportunities in store for your child this year:
We will do our best to get and keep your children "hooked on reading!" by reading a wide variety of books to them, and recommending specific reading materials.
Students in each grade will be learning age appropriate library skills, including how to use the library, how to choose just right books, how to care for books and how the library is organized. They will also learn about authors and illustrators. Third graders will learn how to use Destiny, our automated catalog.
Knapsacks of Knowledge: A Literacy Program for Parents and Children
Knapsacks of Knowledge are canvas bags containing books, activities, and projects for fun and learning. Each knapsack contains 3 to 4 books and the materials to complete the activities and projects. We have 46 knapsacks on a variety of exciting topics including Me on the Map, Celebrations, Eric Carle, Dogs, Children Around the World. New titles are being added every year. When you and your child are done, fill out the evaluation and return the knapsack. Your child will receive a free book! Parent permission is required to check out the knapsacks. You may check out a Knapsack before or after school, at Family Involvement Nights, or sign a permission slip for your child to borrow one on library day. It may be borrowed for 3 weeks. Knapsacks of Knowledge provide a creative and enjoyable learning opportunity for you and your children to read and play together. Borrow one soon!
